I'm all for the death penalty for XF abuse. Not much you can do if a moron thinks you have valuables in your car. Leaving it unlocked is an invitation to general vandalism or someone trying to rip your radio out. The best and only precaution is to park it where these is traffic and lights.
When I traveled with mine, I would park it in the front of hotels (away from other cars) but where there was a lot of light. As a matter of fact, the Doubletree-Dearborn used to let me park under their carport in the spot where their security car parked since I was a frequent guest for 3 years. As a matter of fact, it got to the point that I would pull in behind the security car and they would pull out to give me the whole space.
I also avoid restaurants and bars...I mean sports establishments...where I cannot see the XF from a window. There are a lot of places I just won't take it.
Anyway, condolences to you for the damage. At least it should be easily repairable.
