Default Another Newb Install (?s/Advice)

Hey all, i'll cut to the chase. Basically just a standard head unit install (with a few exceptions) but want to make sure I have everything I need and all the steps worked out so everything will go as smoothly as possible. (I have done a couple receiver installs but just basic harness hookup and done)

Goal:
Install receiver and be able to control front and rears separately as outlined in This Thread. Also I want to either modify the cup holder into an Iphone dock or route the ipod/iphone cable into the glovebox or console storage compartment (pref console) [optional: Add speed sensitive volume like roadster if not too involved]

Parts:
[[ordered from crutchfied with factory unit+infinity\no nav selected]]
Alpine IDA-X305
Volkswagen Wire Harness receiver, 1987-up
Euro Antenna Adapter OEM F to OEM F to Motorola M
Universal OEM DIN Tool Pair For select VW and Mercedes models
** they do not have the din tools in stock so I picked up the Walmart specials this weekend outlined in This Thread

Process: (what I have so far)
the steps outlined in This Thread are pretty straight forward.
Remove the Stock Stereo:

1. Insert the keys into the slots at the bottom of the stereo with the notches facing inward. The Crutchfield keys had to be inserted all the way to latch. You should hear a click for each key.
2. Pull the unit out and disconnect the harness and antenna.
3. On each side of the stereo you'll see the latch that the key is attached to. Use a screwdriver and press down on the latch until it clicks and releases the key. (See Picture)

Splice and Attach the Harness:

1. When splicing the Scosche harness to the aftermarket harness that comes with your new headunit remember that you can do this inside.
2. Match the colors of each wire and crimp them together with the crimp caps. Do this for all the wires EXCEPT the Red, Yellow, and Blue wires. The constant and switched power wires are flipped, so you will need to connect the Red wire of the Scosche harness to the Yellow wire of the aftermarket one and the Yellow wire of the Scosche harness to the Red wire of the aftermarket harness. The Blue antenna wire on the Scosche unit is actually the remote wire. Attach the Blue-White wire from the aftermarket harness to the Blue wire on the Scosche harness. (See Picture) It is usually recommended that you use the RCA Pre-Outs in the back of your aftermarket unit so that you do not blow out your speakers. However, I have yet to have any problems. I haven't seen any posts with problems from this either.
After that I have to add the separate channel functionality.

From the thread it looks like I will need to pick up
2 sets of RCA cables? (are there certain ones with open ends to pick up or just buy the usual and strip the end off?)

Sooo
Add 4 channel capability + Ipod Connection:
1. Uncover stock amp location

2. Snip wires on amp input pins
7 - Right Door speaker input (+)
6 - Right Door speaker input (-)
10 - Right Sub input (+)
9 - Right Sub input (-)
1 - Left Door input (+)
2 - Left Door input (-)
8 - Left Sub input (+)
3 - Left Sub input (-)
3. Splice Pre outs to corresponding Amp inputs

4. Run Ipod/Iphone connection wire to ? Ultimately I would like to transform the cup holder into an Iphone dock but that will probably come later. For this reason I would like to put it into the console storage area so it's already in the general location I want it to end up. I have not looked at the storage bin carefully but I doubt there is a hole there for me to use. Should I go ahead a drill (and if so is there any way to make it somewhat presentable?) Or should I just run it to the glovebox where it looks like I wont have to do any mods? [I have an older iphone (1st gen) that I will most likely use as a hard drive to play the music from, only plugging in my current (3g) If i need to do some charging etc.]

5. Clean up, put everything in place and play with buttons for a while..

[optional] Speed sensitive volume adjust? Is this worth the hassle? Some people say that the coups have it but my volume doesn't seem to change at all.
(comparing to new mustang) I also read that it messes with the EQ, I do not like the sound of that quite as much. I find myself adjusting enough between driving and stoplight where it would be worth the effort though if it is not too much of an undertaking.

Any clarification/help/suggestions/corrections appreciated.

Thanks!
