Thanks Howard. That is the thread that got me to the point I am now. In that thread, they do not mention taking the back plate off as it is not necessary for what they were doing.

I have tried pulling to the point I was concerned about breaking something, so I decided to back off and see if others have just removed the pull handle back plate.
