I don't think that will work, but I know it works on older cars. The clutch pedal has to be down to start the car. The drivetrain will rotate to absorb the energy, but there will be no spark or fuel.

I think your best troubleshooting tool would be a multimeter. You can tap into switches, injector cables, sensors etc. and check for continuity through them. For example, tapping across a fuel injector. A fuel injector is basically just an electromagnet / normally open switch. If you are cranking the car, you should see voltage through an injector.
