How bad was the damage?

Unless the damage was really bad, I doubt the mishap has anything to do with the engine racing.

Also, when the clutch is going out, the throttle does not redline all by itself.

There are four possible causes:

The actual throttle pedal is having a problem (like the Toyotas).
The TPS (throttle position sensor) is going bad.
The throttle body itself is having trouble with its motor.
The ECU is giving bad data to the throttle body.
