I think you are possibly reading too much into the state code, which from what I have found, states the following: "Lamps shall be properly fastened; direct light properly; be of a color not contrary to Tables II—IV; and not be so obstructed by a screen, bar, auxiliary equipment or a device as to obscure, change the color of or obstruct beam. "

I would argue that obstructing a beam likely means that it doesn't meet the following, also taken from the PA code: "...under normal atmospheric conditions shall be capable of being seen and distinguished during nighttime operation at a distance of 500 feet. Stop lamps, turn signals and hazard warning lamps shall be visible at distance of 100 feet during normal sunlight."

I can virtually guarantee that my lights fit all of those requirements. The red, orange, and white (backup) lights still appear the same color as they always did. I can tell you that I've had quite a few close calls with cops in the last 2 months with regard to speeding and I was never pulled over. If I was that far out of spec, I have no doubt that someone would have pulled me over by now.

The law on this seems pretty open to interpretation.
