This was not mentioned in your original post, but the efficiency will be less because it lacks the draw of the intake. Venting crankcase gases to the atmosphere probably violates Federal pollution laws and if caught would cause a failure on emissions tests, definitely in Canada.
Positive Crankcase Ventilation was the first pollution device fitted to cars back in the mid sixties. The amount of oil that went through this hose often caused it to go soft and fall of the connectors. A plugged valve or loose hose caused carburation problems, rough idle etc. So not running this hose back to the engine would cause problems and a CE light these days as Beaner says.
