If silicone is present in the crankcase oil, oxygen sensors can fail. That is why some brands of synthetics are not approved for Mercedes engines, Silicone RTV sealing the covers could easily migrate to the engine oil. Also during the curing process the fumes can enter the opening to the intake manifold since the cover would be off.
