I have yet to remove the alt from a Crossfire so this is all a guess. On a lot of cars, the mounting bracket uses a bushing to keep the alt tight in place so the case doesn't get crushed or cracked when tightening.

With the alternator off, you can get a small hammer and punch in there and knock it back a tic or two to allow the alternator to fall in place.
