As indicated in the above post the gap that the alternator fits in is adjustable and the bolt pulls the back clamping nut toward the front of the car and maintains the pulley in alignment with the belt. The distance between the front and rear faces on the mounting shoulder can be different and the clamping distance is automatically adjusted by this design. The rear post does not move just the part sliding inside it.
