I guess if you had a brown car you could just leave them be and have matching tires and car. I don't like mine glossy either that's why I rub it in. Just a nice dull new looking black sidewall. Another reason to use an applicator is you wont get those halo's on your driveway or garage floor.
I just brush them with soap and water everyweek. They stay black, not deep black but definately not brown. On previous cars I would use tire shine and they seemed to get dirty faster.
