You don't really check for it, just drive it. Mine did not do it the day I bought it in Dallas. The next day it did it twice. It does it fairly regularly, and I will be taking it in to get fixed next month. 2nd gear is easy to start in, so I just don't use 1st much right now. If you come to a stop and put it in first before you stop it will not disengage. If you stop and release the clutch, and then you put it in first it does it quite often.
