i think a lot of tire centers are interested only in selling you a new tire vs. repairing an existing tire. so even though a plug can void the warranty on a tire, it is still worth doing if you are otherwise stranded. plus, tire warranties have so many disclaimers that it is very rarely that they are enforceable. my left rear tire not only has tire-fit sealant in it, it also has a plug. i plan to replace all 4 tires together in another 3 years or so.
i carry a "plug repair kit" with me at all times...stored next to the compressor in the lower hatch area.
a plug repair kit about $5 at your local auto parts store...cheap insurance imo.
