They will not damage the paint. If you do apply to the painted surface and you left it on for a few years, it is possible that the areas around the badges could fade slightly while the area under the badge would not.

On my black car that has not been an issue. The adhesive used will not just fall off but will come off if you want it to (personal experience with this as I have changed badging time to time)
