I thought our cars were pretty keen on protecting themselves. I seem to remember when the big pulleys were starting to come out that the ECU was making changes to keep it in the safe zone. The later tunes trimmed the fat off by leaning it out and kicking up the timing a bit. I'll see if I can't dig up that post...
