I have oil sitting on the shelf and you say its breaking down, gimme a break. Oil sitting in the sump does not break down, if its old and dirty the suspended solids will slowly sink to the bottom but the oil will stay OK. About the only thing that evaporates from the oil is water, everything else stays there.
Crude oil has sat in the ground for millions of years and its still good, it's just harder to get these days.
