Default Re: Well, time for a new convertable top...

Hey Char .....relax a minute, hopefully your top is in reasonably good shape other then this window situation, and if it is, do we assume that you followed the instructions on tighed1s post regarding the reglueing procedure? I had my window coming apart in Jan 2010, and followed his instructions, and it's still holding like new after many raisings and lowerings. I do keep my car garaged and out of the sun as much as possible when not in use, and this might have somewhat to do about the success. I did add to his procedure in that I applied the 3M window weld with a small soldering brush and worked the "stuff" into the area where it is still attached, with a small bladed screw driver. The window should be cleaned of any old glue and then wiped with alcohol or acetone (carefully) and the top area (where glued) should be cleaned as best as possible. Don't use solvents on the material, just pick or litely scrape.
The glueing should be done when the top is slacked slightly. Release the locking handle and push it up like lowering the top, but don't activate the top down button. This should give you enuff slack to work with. Utilizing this "slack" will allow you to get the glue applied adequately. Apply the "glue" with the brush fairly liberally and carefully, realizing that the stuff is nasty, and can be messy..then work the glue into the area where the window is still holding with the screw driver.
After glueing, pull the top latch down and secure it. This will tighten the material to the glass. If you need to, stuff something behind the window to support the glass, but be careful it doesn't contact any glue on back of the window, or it will stick and be a pain in the a$$ to get out. After completing this part, leave it set up for 24 to 36hrs. Don't drive the car, or lower the top. Any glue that is sticking out of the seam (over glue) can be carefully removed with a single edge razor blade AFTER it sets up! Don't try to clean it up while still wet, it'll get all over and be more difficult to clean. After the glue sets up, loosen the top latch again, and check your work. Try not to leave the top down for a while when not is use. Whenever I put it away overnite or for a couple of days, I put the top up.
One other thing.... the car should be protected from the sun while doing all this till the glue is set, so a garage is the best place. Try it again .... and good luck ....any ???s PM me.

A very happy BLACK roadster owner .... Howard

EDIT: It's very hard to just get rid of something that's in good shape, that with a little care can be saved.
