Default Filter oil leak

When I first bought the car about 6 months ago, I needed to change the oil and took it to Pep boys for an oil change. It took me a few months to find this site and read my first oil change. I hit a few big bumps in the road. I don't know if this caused the leak but it showed up a few weeks later. Before I realized the car was leaking, the car made a grinding sound when backing out the first ten feet. It seemed to be related to the clutch and I thought it was a throw out bearing. When I changed the oil (thanks to this site) the filter slid off the shaft of the filter assembly as I pulled it out of the engine. It was a cheap paper filter which I guess had the wrong oil ring I.D. The grinding when I back out has stopped after the oil was changed.

What do you think the grinding was? Do you think I could have damaged the engine?
