I get the same smell when I run the car hard. The exhaust runs pretty close to the metal portion of the trunk. There is some sound deadening material that gives off that smell when it is heated up. Next time, pull up the trunk cover and put your hand over the area closest to the exhaust. You'll see its warm and kind of tacky.
