Well, as long as you get the manual transmission, you'll have the more powerful engine. I dunno if the high-end "Shinka" model is really worth it or not (supposedly minor suspension tweaks). The trim levels were different when I bought mine last year (I got all the engine and suspension goodies, but cloth interior, no nav, etc.).

I know nothing about the Crossfire except for it's existence (which is why I just joined - to learn about your car), so I can't compare the two. I can say that if you're into brute power and bragging rights, the RX-8 is not for you. On the other hand, if you appreciate a near-religious experience of "becoming one" with your car, you'll love it. With the 50/50 weight distribution, and all the weight being low and centered (it's a mid-engine car), the handling is incredibly nimble. Some live for that sorta feeling, some couldn't care less.

The mileage does stink. I get 18mpg in mixed driving. With the small tank, I'm looking for fuel every 220 miles or so.

The oil consumption is indeed normal for a rotary (it's not burned, it's injected to lube/seal the apex seals). It's only around 1/2 quart per 3000 miles or so. It's not gonna break anyone's bank account.
