i don't think you're going to find a study that addresses the ideal psi (if that's what you are asking). there are to many variables related to tire design and vehicle loading and design to come up with conclusive data.

higher pressures will allow the car to corner better. higher pressures generally reduce the rate of treadwear and increase fuel economy. higher pressure also allows the tire to run cooler which is important at high speeds.

on the negative side higher pressures result in a more harsh ride and reduce traction on soft surfaces (e.g. snow) and on uneven surfaces.

40 psi would probably be a good pressure for "breaking your personal best."
