It is a small electronic part behind your gaspedal which nobody will ever see unless they are actually looking for it. Even then, it will look like any other electronic crap so they will need to be looking specifically for it. so your warranty would be fine and no, it would not be illegal ofr stock autocross racing. They dont need to know...
About failure.. Let's say it did fail. Simply unplug it and plug the stock wire to the gas pedal like from the factory (5 minutes). Go on your way.
You are over-analyzing this.. Just get one and enjoy.
