Default Re: Removing the Wing

Since we're talking about the rear wing, words of advice for you all:

I removed my Srt coups rear wing last year & since Daimler had unpainted exposed metal on the wing; (where bolts are attached to hold on the wing & going thru the back hatch), The exposed unpainted metal began to rust! DAIMLER>>>>>EXPOSED unpainted metal??? I scraped it down & treated the unpainted metal surface with clear Por 15 (make sure you also treat the attaching bolts with the por15..the nuts will still go on them with a thin coat or 2 of the por 15), then cleaned the painted area it rests on & applied a HUGE bunch of wax, then re-installed that wing. That car is now done! Don't forget to re-install the o-rings & DO NOT over tighten the 4 nuts that hold the wing on!

NOW Car # 2, the srt rag-top is a different story! 1st I removed the entire plate on which the wing rests! I STRONGLY recommend eveyone removes that plate! There are about 12-14 10MM nuts holding that plat on which the wing is attached to) The junk I found under it was amazing! My car is garaged & not exposed to weather, but still lots of dirt under that plate. Then i removed the wing. Again rust starting to form.UNPAINTED METAL!!! I again treated the area with the clear por 15 after i removed the forming rust with steel wool. Also i treated the attaching bolts. Before I attached the plate & wing, I applied a huge amount of car wax & didn't wipe it off, to the area under the rear plate, and between the wing & that plate. The Rag-top has 6 o-ring, be sure they're clean and they're inplace before you reassemble the wing to the plate. DO NOT overtighten the attaching nuts!!!

I still can't believe a $50,000 car has rust issues, while my 1987 Chrysler lebaron had 250,000 miles without 1 rust issue? Maybe its a Daimler thing!
