Where I live there is a saying when the roads are flooded... "turn around don't drown". If you try to drive through a flooded road you will get fined thousands of dollars. people still do it and need to be rescued. People are always dying... it is all over the news... and the news has been saying "turn around don't drown" for years. People still do it and risk their lives. People never learn! Survival of the fittest. So strict driving laws and fines won't stop anything.
I know what you mean, but we could at least keep some stupid drivers off the road by not ever giving them licenses in the first place. Some may still drive without a license, but some may think twice when faced with severe consequences.
And when these morons still do drive, we can put them in jail or fine them a pretty penny for endangering others' lives. I don't think this country takes the task of driving seriously enough. The issue of cupholders is good example- many European cars (made for Europe) either don't come with them or come with very small ones. Here in America, our cars are made with large ones and lots of them. I remember the family minivan when I was a kid- a '93 Plymouth Voyager. From what I can remember, the thing had more cupholders than there were seats. Why the difference? Europeans focus on driving as a task alone, while here in America we text, do our hair, makeup, drink coffee, talk on the cellphone, read books, and in some occasions we change our clothes while driving on the highway.
Maybe the problem is that we allow people that do things like this to drive off with a slap on the wrist. Merely insulting another driver while using the Autobahn can result in a $500 USD fine. You can also have your license suspended for one to three months for tailgating while traveling over 100km/h (about 60 mph).
Statistically, the Autobahn is safer than our highways. Stricter laws don't matter?
