Re: VS. Modded 335i. Vid inside
I've ran against a couple of 335i's and couldn't for the life of me figure out how a car with 500 more lbs. and only 300 horsepower and lbs. ft. of torque could actually keep up with an SRT6. To make matters worse they're faster from 100+ than we are (barely).
I found out that BMW pulled the same stunt japanese manufacturers did in the 90's with the Supra and severely underrated the horsepower. Based on the test numbers alone they're pushing about 400-420 horsepower with similar torque. I guess they hope people don't realize they can get a car almost as fast as a M3 for $25,000 less.
BTW to add some numbers behind what I'm talking about; a stock BMW 335i like the one you raced claims a curb weight of 3593 lbs. with a horsepower and torque rating both at 300. Car and driver performed a test and claimed a 4.9 0-60, just a tenth under our cars which weigh about 500 lbs. less for the coupe and been shown to have 350 horsepower. I used a horsepower calculator to come up with that car actually having to have 400 horsepower. The same calculator came up with 350 horsepower for our cars. As for the top end it has a lot to do with our cars having really bad gearing in 4th and 5th more than actual power, if we could tune our top end gearing then we would pull hard away from those boats due to weight and aerodynamics alone.
One more edit: I found some dyno numbers from a stock 335i that show 384hp at the wheels, so I guess my original assumption of them having 400hp is right. They probably give SRT-8 drivers the shock of their life when they get left in the dust by a non-M BMW 3 series.
