That's a good rule of thumb if you have the option not to drive it. If you don't, in the winter, it might be best to deploy it manually and leave it up if there is a snowstorm or ice storm. This way, the auto deployment is disengaged and you don't have to worry about it. Similar to leaving your wipers up so they don't stick to the windshield.
My spoiler is squeaking now so I need to pull the inside hatch cover and give her some grease. I may leave mine up until I get that done just in case.
