That's my point, the flywheel would move imperceptibly, for it to move the bearings would have to have a lot of play in them. The flywheel can move fore and aft (.003 to .010)more than up and down (.001 to .002).
The flywheel can only move up and down by the amount of clearance in the main bearings.
If you study the repair manual you see that a special tool is used, this locates in the threaded mounting holes of the starter and a section of the tool locates and locks into the flywheel teeth.
When the CPS is removed look for a scrape or gouge on the metal and plastic face, a mark would suggest that the flywheel touched the sensor and damage it.
I do not believe the coincidence that the CPS failed at the same time as your pulley change, the odds are really remote on that happening when you think about it.

6. Using Special Tool 9102 Flywheel Locking Tool (1), lock the flywheel by inserting the tool into the starter opening.

Starter teeth take a lot of abuse and get worn quite severely, a damaged starter gear can do a lot of damage on the flywheel teeth requiring a new flywheel. I am not saying that is the case here, but it can happen. I have seen the damage on a car I owned, fortunately the starter gear failed before the flywheel was completely ruined.
