I had that same problem with the Sony I used for a bit, very loud with speaker outs but not very loud using pre-outs. With my Becker head unit I have been using speaker outs for nearly 6 months now and there's no signs of any problem and I listen to my stereo LOUD!

PS Using the pre-outs is the correct and safest way... but screw it if my speakers blow I'll put better ones in!
