Default Penetrol does it fight rust

Penetrol, a paint additive used to make oil based paints more workable, is touted as being better than Waxoyl for preventing rust.
The advantage of it is that it is thinner and creeps into small gaps better than water, after drying it leaves a thin film that resists moisture. There is a smell associated with it, but what rustproofing does not smell.
Anyone use it, opinions for or against?
