Re: Is my car the only one falling apart?
Yours is not the only one falling apart.
I bought mine new in March 2004 and had only minor problems until the temperature dropped in October. At that time it started to lurch to the right every time the right front wheel lost traction (potholes, manhole covers, wet paint stripes) and the driver's door popped open about 3/8 of an inch as soon as the car started to move. Shortly after that the driver's window started hanging up on the drip rail every time the door was closed.
I think what is wrong is that some of the spot welds holding the body structure together have failed. The reason I think that is the problem is that the car changed shape with changes in temperature. When it was 72ºF the top of the driver's window cleared the bottom of the drip rail by about 1/8 inch. When it was 10ºF the driver's window overlapped the drip rail by about 1/8 inch.
I suspect that a lot of the people who have wind noise and door rattling problems have doors that are not closing properly due to this problem. When the car was new you could hold a straightedge (ruler or credit card) horizontally across the gap between the door and the rear quarter panel and it would touch both. Now (after several dealer attempts to fix the problem) a straightedge held against the door clears the rear quarter panel by more than 1/8 inch which means that the rubber seals between the door and the body are not touching. This was made clear to me on a mild winter day when I opened the door to leave work and found an icicle had grown across the door seal.
I have made nine trips to four Chrysler dealers attempting to get these problems fixed. I have repeatedly e-mailed Chrysler, the only result of which was a phone conversation with the local service representative during which I was treated scornfully and told that Chrysler would not reimburse me for the car. I have called the owner of the chain of dealerships I bought the car from who told me to contact the Better Business Bureau's arbitration board (which Chrysler does not participate in). I have sent in the card included in the manual for customers who feel that they have bought lemon cars (per Goodenough's recommendation) and have received no response.
Something to think about; the door rattling around in it's frame contains an air bag designed to counteract the force of a fatal side impact by cushioning your head with an equal and opposite force. What happens if the rattling door's impact against the frame triggers that airbag?
