OK. blackcrossfire07 has solved the mystery in the most logical way.
Larry Hize has read the Owners Manual but does not remember all of it.
Using blackcrossfire's logical way of thinking I suspect that Larry Hize is not a man, after all men do not read manuals or instructions.
Elementary my dear Watson.

The actual events as stated do not fit the scenario outlined by blackcrossfire, but possibly the key fob was in the pocket, triggered and .....
The answer is good enough for me, as the original theory is just not plausible.
Or is it, I call my car Christine because it has done some weird things, maybe she has a sister.
