To be fair plastic is just a more suitable material. Metal letters were attached with holes in the body, they caused rust etc... If you tried to glue metal letters on in the sun the temperature of the metal would soften the glue and the letters would probably sag.

Here in the UK VW allow you to specify the car without some badges, 2.0TDi ETC.
