You already mentioned the cabin air filter. The stink may not go away until you change it. Mine smelled of vanilla popourri and leaving the windows down for three weeks didn't help. Changing the air filter did the trick. Regardless of age, that charcoal is doing its job until it can't take any more.

I bought a Mann filter (AutohausAZ) but it was not a charcoal filter. It lacked the heavy plastic frame of the filter I removed. Next filter will be a charcoal filter. They are as cheap from AutohausAZ. Haven't had time to find other good sources.
