you're right regarding if you afford a 40k car you shouldn't worry about the gas, but in my country the medium salary is somewhere about 150 EUR. In present i own a BMW 330XD (it was 60k when bought it) which takes 10l/100km (23.52 mpg) and now i wonder how much it will "eat" the crossfire. I asked some users on this forum, and i was surprised to find out that don't takes more than 13l/100km if cruising normally. So i was worry about the consumption, because instead the money for the gas... here the streets are all f'd up! (sorry for expression) Every months i must take my bmw to do the geometry, and repair the wheels (17"), which is another money to waste, but in your country the streets are so good you don't even feel when riding. I was through Italy, Germany, Austria, France, and it makes a very big difference regarding the roads, highways and streets.
