I use a 50% Simple Green mix and a soft brush. It's as effective as Gunk (I used that for years) but easier on the rubber and plastic bits. Not to mention the environment.

Removing the belly pan is a good idea.

Warm (not hot) engine.
Remove engine cover.
plastic bag and rubber band over intake/MAF.
Spray everywhere you can.
Let sit for 10 minutes.
Mist with water. Spray again.
Wait 5 minutes.
Scrub Everything you can.
Rinse with soft to medium stream of garden hose water. NEVER with a pressure washer.
Rinse again.
Blow and pat dry.
