Because of all the trouble with the first ones, loose rivets and I believe odd sizes and shimming problems. I'll do a search sometime.
I am sure the OEM ones are better made and more consistent. But what do I know, that's just what I remember.
I have never had one in my hand.
The envelope to make a new one is the same as modifying the old one, so no benefit from any additional strength. Depending on how close the grooves are to relief in the bore there should be no problems.
Modifying the OEM seems to be the best option and has the benefit of economy.
