When my Valve Covers were leaking, I removed the splash pan, and looked up at the oil pan and the under carriage engine area, it was obvious that oil was present (outside of the engine).

Another sign was engine oil caked onto the insides of the splash cover itself.

The point is that if your Covers are leaking, typically the oil on the underside of the car is usually obvious...
