If a seal fails on the hydraulic jack, it can be damaging or deadly depending upon where you are when it happens.

Invest in a fairly nice set of jack stands, they are usually quite inexpensive.

Here is a set for all of about $20 on Northern Tool.
Seals do not have to fail to leak, they leak all the time. The jack slowly goes down as I found out when I designed a jack for the nose wheel of an airplane. They jacked up the nose wheel of the plane, removed the wheel and went home for the night and returned in the morning to find the jack collapsed and the plane nose down ... oops! I got ***** and added a lock pin. Problem solved, lesson learned.
