I later did the side markers with black paint and like 2 light coats, this made the light come through much better and still looked super dark. From that, I'd say black gloss paint is the better way to go.
Also if you want to put them back to stock all you have to do is sand it off then use rubbing compound and seal them with clear and they will look brand new again. I did this when I put it up for sale.
You might want to mask off the reverse area of the light then clear coat the light when your done leaving it clear. Mine were almost useless between the tint on my window's and tint on the light housing.

Thanks for all of the information. I really want to spray my tail lights instead of tinting them because I think it looks a lot better.. but I was always worried about how to change them back to stock without having to buy a whole new set (~$450?).
I have a friend that sanded their tail lights with 2000 grit wet sand paper and then washed the lenses beforehand, is this the kind of prep you did?
Also, what kind of rubbing compound did you use to get the paint off?
