I have a friend that sanded their tail lights with 2000 grit wet sand paper and then washed the lenses beforehand, is this the kind of prep you did?

Also, what kind of rubbing compound did you use to get the paint off?

Yes just use gloss black paint and gloss clear paint to do the job. When you want to remove it just sand it off using course / med / light wet sanding paper then finish with a rubbing compound from the local auto parts store. I used 3M compound then gloss clear painted them. Good luck and go easy with the black paint.
