If not the relay control module as suggested above it may have been the Crankshaft Position Sensor. Yeah, i thought about the CPS as well, but since he did not mention it throwing a code, and I would assume when he had it in the shop they would have checked for any codes. At any rate, I hope he did not take a bath on the price due to the undiagnosed condition. BTW, a CPS would have cost in the range of $40 to fix.
Maybe you can at least pass this info on to whom ever purchased it and save them some headaches. Here is a link to the RCM fix.
