I used alcohol, fingernails, elbow grease, down to the black plastic and re-dyed the pieces black using "forever black". if you don't mind those parts being black, it worked very well for me on my slk. keep in mind that for the best result you need to take the piece off the car, but be very carefull, especially with the instrument cluster surround.
