It's not all Germans anymore; the Mazda 6-speed on the MS6 is push-down. It makes sense when you've got reverse off where someone inexperienced might go looking for 1st.
Hell, I'm lucky my other car (4runner) has a good reverse gate or I'd be hitting reverse where I wanted my nonexistent 6th gear
