We bought both cars brand new from dealerships.
The '08 car originally came with a Varta battery and the car sat around somewhere for some time after being built. The battery probably never got recharged, it just died or was damaged so much that it was replaced this side of the pond using a Mopar battery that was available.

The dealer could have had it laying around and put it in when it failed on his lot, I think this is very likely. What better place to get rid of stale batteries than this, who looks at the battery in a new car?
