Using files and sandpaper are not to be recommended. If it is the contacts that are at fault you should use very fine abrasive cloth and leave a polished surface. These contacts are polished for a reason and you should attempt to do the same. Leaving a rough spot means you will be doing it again too soon.

If you have a rough surface the spark can arc across any rough high spot and pit that area, a smooth and polished surface is less prone to pitting.
