I agree and it's damn nice of them to salute you for doing the right thing! That turn lane thing is a pain. I had two cars in front fo me last week in that situation and what made me blow was I could see the drivers and passengers in both cars yakking away and looking around and pointing and waving their arms and totally not paying attention to driving. And the lead car had stopped right on the crosswalk line. My horn was all they got for their efforts, leaving me at the red light.
I saw something today that happens all the time and it's really a head-scratcher: Elderly drivers who turn off a busy road into a store or mall parking lot and immediately stop after they cross the entrance, stacking up everyone else who was behind them trying to make the same turn. I know it's because they are trying to orient themselves and look around and find a store name, etc. but when you're hanging out in space waiting for that one distracted driver to come along and smash you from behind, it's very stressful! And by 'elderly,' I mean someone older than me by a day!
