Don't quote me on this, but outside air should come thru the Cabin Filter and probably pulls from that windshield cowling under the Wipers.

If it's pulling inside the engine air at idle and you smell exhaust, it's time to put that puppy on a lift for a complete exhaust system check.

I would also check closely the exhaust manifold at the engine.
