I thought about doing what you did but with talking to a couple body shops they said the process to properly "prep" and paint the stock plastic pieces would cost around as much as the install of the mesh.

They used some very fine wire and attached the mesh to the inside hidden part on the bumper. Very hard to notice unless your eye is a few inches away from the mesh itself.
