Yup - mine is the same way. The first time I tried to close it I thought I was going to break the handle off! I almost took it back, but I found that if I have a little momentum when I go to latch it closed, I can get it closed back up without as much pulling force.
I like how tight and smooth the top is, so I decided to leave it as is.
