You didn't mention if you used a meter to verify hot and ground leads. I have been SO happy with the HID lights, I put another set in for my brights yesterday. For the brights, each lead is a single wire, the same shade of black. I used the meter and marked the hot lead (with pink fingernail polish - my wife's, really).

Normal bulbs can run fine "backwards," but the HID's are a different animal.

One of my brights worked with no fiddling; the other did not. It turned out that the connector at the ballast caught one metal prong (inside the socket on the ballast), but the other spread to the side. I had to carefully bend it back into shape, and then it worked as it should. I suspect I'm not the only one to find that problem.
